Dr. Ruf is from Louisville, KY., where he earned a BA degree from Bellarmine College in 1965. After receiving an MD from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 1969, he spent two years of residency in general surgery at Emory University before being called upon in 1971 to serve in the U.S. Navy for three years. Upon returning home he continued his training in general surgery for two years at the University of Kansas, before moving to Charleston, South Carolina where he completed his residency in Plastic Surgery. After a year of fellowship in Cosmetic Surgery and Hand Surgery at Albany Medical Center University Medical Center in New York, Dr. Ruf and Dr. DeLoach established Savannah Plastic Surgery in August 1980.
In 1981, Dr. Ruf achieved certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has maintained an aggressive schedule of professional meetings and courses to advance his knowledge and skills. He has spoken on a wide range of topics in plastic surgery at local, regional, national and meetings. He has undergone cosmetic surgery himself, using the techniques and skin products from the Skin Institute at Savannah Plastic Surgery. Teaching surgery residents at Memorial Health University has been a permanent part of Dr. Ruf's professional activities. Special interests and expertise include cosmetic procedures of the face and breasts, body contour (including lifts and liposuction), laser work, hair transplantation, birth deformities (especially cleft lip and prominent ears) and finally, hand surgery.
He was elected President of Georgia Medical Society (Chatham) in 1994 and throughout his career has maintained an active role with the county and state medical associations working on many issues related to patient care. Since 1989 he has served as medical director of Southeastern Georgia Cleft Lip & Palate Clinic. Dr. Ruf has been chosen and has remained an active member of all regional and national plastic surgery societies, where patient care and patient safety remain the highest priority.
Dr. Ruf has been married to his wife Patricia since 1971. They have three children. His interests, outside the annual medical mission trips to Guatemala, include boating, gardening, golf, art and history of the Second World War. Dr.Ruf remains very active in his church and community.
For Dr. Ruf it is a pleasure and an honor to see new patients for consultation on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and Saturday of every month. He is committed to individualized care for each patient, technical excellence, and care after surgery.
